Though Jorge Ramos was born and raised in America some of his family members are undocumented, adding extra challenges to their home life. “Being a Latino in America is not that easy,” he says. “My family had to go through so much to keep a roof over our heads. My motivation to find work was to give back to them, help them get documentation and live in peace.”
Ramos attended an information session for Goodwill’s Advanced Manufacturing program. Immediately he saw a pathway to his goal to support his family. He enrolled in the program, learning everything from communication and workplace etiquette to hands-on training with power tools and welding at Athens Technical College. He completed the program with OSHA certification, an Advanced Manufacturing Operations Specialist certificate and experience interning at Caterpillar, Inc.
His internship was so successful he was hired full-time as an assembly line worker at the plant. “The experience at Goodwill was awesome,” Ramos says. He hopes to move up within the company and repay his family for their sacrifices.
