In Spring 2021, twenty-year-old Christina B. was looking for her first job. A 2019 graduate of Mundy Mill High School, Christina had taken time to get her life in order and consider a return to school. Ultimately, she decided it was time to enter the workforce.
Christina and her mother shop at Goodwill’s Old National store almost every day. The pair often stopped into the career center to see if there were opportunities for Christina. When they saw information about This Way ONward, they were excited, because Christina had long wanted to work at Old Navy.
The next step was for Christina to attend a This Way Onward information session, which she did in mid-April. Christina would rely on her mother for transportation, so she chose Old Navy’s Fayetteville location, which was closest to her home. This store was not part of the internship program, so Christina would be pursuing the brand associate option.
Christina enrolled in the virtual job readiness training classes necessary to proceed to an interview. Christina immediately distinguished herself by her active participation each week. She enthusiastically answered questions and offered examples. While the classes continued, Christina worked hard on preparing for the interview. She scheduled mock sessions with Special Projects Coordinator Deborah Dietzler and shared that she practiced her answers every morning.
A mid-May virtual interview was scheduled with Old Navy Fayetteville Manager Christina Dabbs. Christina B. performed well in the interview and was offered employment immediately. She joined the Old Navy team on June 17th. When her job coach checked in after a few weeks, Christina shared she found the job fun. Her primary task was making sure clothes were in order on the salesfloor. She also learned how to work the shipment and by mid-September, she was also assisting in the fitting rooms.
Having achieved 90-day retention, Christina is looking forward to her future with Old Navy and is excited about the upcoming holiday season, which will be her first in retail. She is really enjoying her interactions with her teammates and customers and is also thrilled to be learning so many new things.
