Fulton County resident Kayla Washington came to Goodwill in July 2020 with an interest in obtaining full-time employment. At twenty years old, she felt it was time pursue a career path, preferably in a clerical or administrative role.
Through Goodwill’s Youth Employment Services program, Kayla participated in the Bank of America internship opportunity. She began with job readiness training and was placed at Ace Hardware in early August. Since a position in retail was not part of her career goals, Case Manager Monica Whitson created a Career Services internship at Goodwill’s Old National Career Center. In this role, Kayla was able to practice various clerical and administrative tasks. During her time at Goodwill, Kayla took advantage of the digital literacy classes made by possible by a generous grant from Fulton CARES. She began to enhance her computer skills by taking practice exams in PowerPoint, Excel, Computer Basics, Navigating the Internet, and Social Media Etiquette. Kayla then sat for the proctored exams and upon successful completion, acquired NorthStar Digital Literacy certificates in Microsoft Office 2016, Basic Computer Skills, Internet Basics, Windows 10, Social Media, and Using Email. With her newfound confidence in using these programs, Kayla is considering returning to school to obtain her certification in Medical Billing and Coding. In the meantime, she has accepted a position at Zaxby’s, where she is making $10 per hour.
