In August 2021, the Georgia Department of Community Supervision referred Fairburn resident Marcus Fretwell to Goodwill’s YARP (Young Adult Re-Entry Program) program. At 21-years-old, Marcus had just been released from prison and was looking for a fresh start. With interest in a warehousing career, he decided Goodwill’s Forklift Training program would provide the necessary credentials to secure stable employment, so he enrolled at the South DeKalb Career Center. The YARP grant enabled Marcus to receive this training at no cost, which would be a great help in his efforts to take his life in a new direction.

While in training, Marcus was an eager participant and contributed greatly to group discussions and exercises. He took a special interest in creating goals for himself and began taking steps toward completing each one. Marcus learned the material quickly and moved on to hands-on training with Atlanta Technical College, where he demonstrated the ability to react to any challenge placed before him. By the end of August, Marcus earned his forklift certification, OSHA10, and CPR/First Aid certifications.

At his program graduation, Marcus was named “most likely to succeed,” and his subsequent accomplishments indicate this was an appropriate honor. Although he came to Goodwill with little job experience, Marcus was offered a full-time certified forklift operator position at Samsung in Fairburn. He was thrilled to obtain employment and began saving for a car.

Marcus reports that he enjoys his job because he can work independently — and he also likes to show off his forklift driving skills! He continues to seek out new employment opportunities and as of February 2022, he joined the team at Chase, making $15.50 per hour. He also contacted Goodwill Case Manager Kirsten Ford to begin the process of earning his GED.

Marcus has achieved a great deal in a short time and shares that his plans include being a supervisor or perhaps owning a trucking company. The Goodwill team has no doubts that Marcus has the ability to accomplish any goal he sets for himself.
