Donation FAQs

Home  >  Donate  >  Donation FAQs

Does Goodwill do pick-ups?

We do not do pick-ups but we have more than 100 convenient locations across North Georgia where you can donate. Search for the one nearest to you using our Location Finder by entering your zip code. All of our donation centers are open seven days a week for your convenience.

What happens to the items I donate?

When you donate, you help put people to work. How? The items we collect are sorted, priced and sold in our stores. We use the money from the sale of these items to fund job training programs and employment services. Each year, we serve tens of thousands of individuals and help place them into good jobs. Thank you. You make a difference in the lives of so many of your North Georgia neighbors.

What does Goodwill accept as donations?

We accept clothing, shoes, accessories, books, furniture, small appliances, household items, CDs/videotapes/DVDs/records, linens, and sporting equipment. While we like to say we can accept almost anything, there are a few items we cannot accept. Click here to review a list of items we can and can’t accept.

Can I claim an IRS deduction for items I’ve donated?

Yes. Goodwill of North Georgia is a 501 (3) (c) nonprofit organization. According to the IRS, donated goods (in good, used condition or better) made to us are tax-deductible. We will provide you with a receipt once you’ve made a donation to keep for your tax records.

I dropped off items at a donation center. Can you tell me how much I can claim for an IRS deduction?

According to IRS regulations, a non-profit organization cannot provide a donor with the dollar value of an in-kind gift. There are many sources to locate reasonable values for your donations. One source is a free program from Intuit called “It’s Deductible”. You may also find this document helpful: Donation Valuation Guide.

Keep in mind that IRS Form 8283 is only required when an in-kind donation exceeds $500 fair market value. Should the fair market value of a single item, or group of similar items, exceed $5,000, you must provide a certified appraised value of the item and Goodwill will complete Part IV of Section B of IRS Form 8283.

I lost/misplaced my ticket and don't have an ID number to log in my donation. What do I do?

Unfortunately, we cannot retrieve your ID number. Our system will not allow us to generate an ID number unless someone makes a donation. If you can find any additional items to donate, we encourage you to bring them to your nearest donation center and you will receive a ticket with a new ID number. You can use the new ID number to register your donation and simply consolidate the values and description of both donations.

What are your donation center hours of operation?

All of our donation centers are open seven days a week for your convenience. In fact, we only close them twice a year – Thanksgiving and Christmas Days. Most donation centers are open from 10am – 6pm Monday through Sunday.  You can check the hours for your nearest center on our Location Finder.

Where is my nearest donation center?

We have over 100 locations across North Georgia where you can donate. Find the one nearest to you by using our Location Finder.

I really believe in the Goodwill mission. Can I donate money?

Absolutely. You can make monetary donations directly from our website at Donations. Financial donations are also tax deductible. Be sure to print your receipt to keep for your tax records. We appreciate your support in helping us put people to work.

Does Goodwill repair items?

Goodwill used to have a training program that trained people to repair broken donations that were then sold. Our mission model has since changed. We no longer have that training program and are not equipped to repair items. We access the quality of donations before placing them on the selling floor. We do not sell Items that are broken, torn or soiled.

What happens to the donated items you can’t sell? Why won't you take all of the stuff I want to donate?

Our goal is to be good stewards of your generosity. We have recycling programs that allows us to minimize our environmental footprint. We recycle items we cannot sell through qualified salvage dealers. Last year, we recycled 3 million tons of computer equipment.

Can I donate a car?

Goodwill does not accept cars as donations but contact the local United Way at 404-527-7200 to find out who does.

Who does Goodwill help?

Everyone. Goodwill helps people who face various obstacles to employment. The obstacles include lack of work history; physical, mental and emotional disabilities; limited education; language barriers; criminal background; dependency on public assistance; corporate downsizing and other challenges that stand in the way to employment. Our services meet the training and placement services available to those who need them.
