Daniel Phillips began his Goodwill journey in August 2021 when he participated in the Getting Ready for Opportunities in Work (GROW) camp. During the week-long program, Daniel consistently expressed his desire to work as a chef at Longhorn, until he was given a tour of the production area of the Cornelia Goodwill store. From that moment on, his heart was set on being an employee of Goodwill of North Georgia.

From GROW, Daniel moved on to the Community Work Adjustment Program (CWAT), where he was trained in sorting, proper use of equipment, baling, and even some donor door operations. Daniel’s favorite assignments were working at the donor door, helping store associates sort donated items, and baling. Daniel also received classroom instruction, soaking up knowledge on subjects including: self-awareness and self-advocacy, financial literacy, resume building, and interviewing etiquette and skills, which featured a mock-interview activity. Daniel quickly became an asset to the Cornelia store through his endless efforts to learn as many new things as possible and his willingness to go above and beyond to help his fellow participants, store associates, and managers.

Daniel’s strong work ethic and desire to learn soon caught the attention of Store Manager Sarah Thompson, who nicknamed him, “The Tank” – a well-earned moniker honoring his ability to power through his assignments. Daniel worked closely with Sarah and often assisted her in tying off the bales when at capacity and taking furniture to the sales floor when ready for purchase. Daniel took pride in every task he was given, but especially in being able to empty the trash for the production associates. Daniel stated, “I like to help them out!”

In addition to cultivating his work-readiness skills, Daniel grew as an individual. Beginning his tenure at Goodwill reserved and soft-spoken, Daniel transformed. Daniel’s counselor, Debbie Howard of Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency, stated, “I was worried he [Daniel] would get overwhelmed and would shut down. Well Kayla and Sherry brought out a personality I never knew. He jokes, talks to people, and everyone is his friend. Imagine my surprise when he told me in a very bold way he wanted to work at Goodwill! Daniel saying what he wanted made me so happy because I knew he found his place and people he feels safe with. As his counselor I did a happy dance!”

While Goodwill of North Georgia’s mission is to “Put people to work,” workforce development expands on that concept by striving to create a safe, judgement-free atmosphere for participants to grow, gain confidence in their abilities, and learn strategies that help them in the workforce and everyday life. Debbie went on to say, “…When I started working with Daniel, I never thought this shy, timid young boy would turn into this young adult who would advocate for himself and enjoy working in his community.” Daniel’s father also mentioned that he’s seen a change in Daniel, specifically in his initiative to take on tasks at home, such as stacking firewood.

On January 13, 2022, Daniel, who is described by his high school teacher, Stephanie Frankum-Lewis, as “…a hard worker and wonderful student whose perseverance exemplifies the Raider spirit,” was offered his very first job — a part-time position working for Goodwill’s Cornelia store. When asked how he felt after being offered the position, Daniel said, “Really good! I’m excited to work at Goodwill!” Daniel began this exciting new chapter on February 3 and in recognition of his achievements and continued success, Goodwill is pleased to honor him with the Outstanding Graduate Award for Cornelia.
