Dionne Butts was used to being busy. The Lithia Springs resident maintained an active lifestyle and was employed in warehouse work until she was diagnosed with MS in 2015. Staying at home was causing her to feel closed in and depressed, so Dionne reached out to a contact at the Shepherd Center who recommended that she investigate Goodwillā€™s programs.

Dionne secured a Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency referral and visited the Old National Career Center in May 2021. She was welcomed by Case Manager Monica Whitson, who used the Community Work Adjustment Training (CWAT) program to craft opportunities where Dionne could learn and grow. One area of emphasis was learning new digital skills which would make her a more competitive candidate.

She credits the Old National team for inspiring her to push forward. Job Coach Kevin Hood always had positive words to brighten her day, and she enjoyed the opportunity to work in the Career Center, where she assisted with a variety of administrative duties. Dionneā€™s proactiveness and leadership on tasks were observed by all who encountered her. She also appreciated the concern of Career Coach Gurie Snow and others, who cautioned her to listen to her body and not overdo it, despite her enthusiasm for her work. Dionne shared that the experience was tailor-made for her, as she likes interacting with people.

In August, after her CWAT training at Goodwill, Dionne was placed in a part-time internship position at Ace Hardware, a valued employment partner of the Old National Career Center. At Ace, she stayed busy with various duties including stocking shelves, helping customers on the sales floor, and staffing the register. Dionne remained at Ace until January 2022, when she secured a better opportunity at Furniture Liquidators of Georgia, where she serves as an elevator operator.

As she celebrated 90 days with her new employer, she reported that she enjoys her new job and will continue to seek out opportunities to better herself. She is also contemplating a return to school to pursue a career in counseling. For now, she is delighting in time with her family, especially her new grandson, who brings much light and joy to her life.

Dionneā€™s perseverance and determination impressed everyone at Goodwill and at Ace Hardware. She continues to set impressive goals for herself and remains focused on achieving them. In recognition, Goodwill is pleased to present Dionne with the Old National Outstanding Graduate 2022 award.
