Krishanda Benton had her mind set on creating a better future for herself. Despite past setbacks, she knew she could rewrite her story. Krishanda believed that learning a new trade would help her achieve her goal of stability and a bright future. She came to Goodwill of North Georgia’s Metropolitan Parkway Career Center and wanted assistance toward a new career path. Case Manager Justin Lane met with her several times to discuss her career goals and introduced her to Goodwill’s different skills trade programs. Krishanda took an interest in the Phlebotomy program. She felt the healthcare industry would provide her with the stability she wanted and that phlebotomy would be a great way to enter the field.

The Metropolitan Career Services team provided her with all the necessary information about the phlebotomy program and helped her access program funding. Fulton County paid for Krishanda’s training with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). Once all of Krishanda’s intake paperwork was completed and funding secured, she was ready to start training.

Krishanda’s unwavering commitment to mastering blood collection techniques and compassionate approach set the stage for her success. Her dedication and intentionality not only impressed her classmates but also led to her recognition by the instructor as an exceptional student. She completed the class in September 2023 and immediately passed her Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Krishanda’s journey continued with an internship at Quick Clinic, where she further honed her skills in drawing blood and checking vitals.

Following her internship, Krishanda’s career took a significant turn. She was offered a position as a teaching assistant at Messiah For Life CPR, the same school where she earned her phlebotomy certification. She accepted the position with a starting wage of $16/hour and thoroughly enjoys her new role. As a Teacher’s Assistant, she provides instructional support and works directly with new phlebotomy students. Krishanda’s success story is a testament to the transformative impact of the training program on aspiring healthcare professionals. She deeply appreciates everyone at Goodwill who supported and motivated her throughout her journey.
