Meet Scott Beam

Scott Beam, a military veteran, faced substantial challenges upon separating from the U.S. Marine Corps. At risk of becoming unhoused, he was looking for a way to find stability and get back into the workforce. Scott initially received housing support from the Salvation Army. He also participated in a program called “Back on my Feet” in which he obtained his Georgia Department of Transportation physical certification after completing the challenge of walking/running over 100 miles. He then was referred to Goodwill of North Georgia for further assistance in achieving his career goals.
Scott was immediately drawn to the commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills training course offered at the Goodwill’s Metropolitan Parkway Career Center. He believed this course would help him overcome his challenging circumstances and have a “reset” on life. Scott was relieved to learn that funds from Invest Atlanta would cover the costs of his skills training. Knowing he would not have to pay out of pocket, Scott could pursue a dream without stressing over finances.

Scott displayed motivation and perseverance despite him not having his own means of transportation. He made it to training each day via public transportation or having a friend give him a ride. He also displayed a strong work ethic by diligently completing his course assignments and being able to test for his CDL certification earlier than his peers. Scott completed his Roadmasters training and passed the CDL state certification test on June 17th, 2024. After passing his state test, Scott was offered a driver position with May Trucking earning $13.85 an hour with benefits and growth opportunities.
“My experience with Goodwill was overwhelmingly positive and successful. They made sure my Roadmaster school was paid for and provided me with the preparation classes to help me with passing the CDL permit test,” Scott said. “Thank you so much Goodwill for all you did for me and others.”
