Terry Zellner was referred to Goodwill’s supportive employment services by his Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (GVRA) counselor. He faced challenges with social interactions and communication, making it difficult for him to find and maintain employment. Terry’s mother was eager to help him re-enter the workforce with a suitable job.

Terry’s mother and his GVRA counselor believed that Goodwill’s Old National Career Center could provide the best support for him. The supportive employment services offer job placement assistance and intensive job coaching for individuals with disabilities during their first year in a new position. Terry wanted employment to gain independence, develop social skills, build relationships, and increase his self-confidence, all while earning his own money.

Terry’s journey began with a meeting with Goodwill employment specialist Tahirah Herring and career pathway coach Candy Allen. Together, they identified his strengths, areas for improvement, and interests. Tahirah created a personalized job plan, conducted mock interviews, and taught Terry job search strategies. She later secured an interview for him with the manager of Goodwill’s Fayetteville retail store. Tahirah accompanied Terry during the interview to ensure it went smoothly and helped him express his experience and skills effectively. Following the interview, Terry was offered a part-time position as an Environmental Service Technician at the store.

With hands-on job coaching and ongoing support from Candy Allen, Terry successfully completed his 90-day probationary period and formed strong relationships with his manager. He credits this job opportunity with significantly improving his self-confidence and independence.
