Xavier Scott came to Goodwill’s Pleasant Hill Career Center with a strong desire to work. He and his mother knew that with the proper support and coaching, he could succeed in his employment journey. Xavier’s Georgia Vocational Rehabilitation Agency (GVRA) counselor referred him to Goodwill of North Georgia’s Career Services because he would have access to the tools needed to address his barriers to employment and ultimately be successful in his future career. Xavier struggled with concentration, social engagement, anxious feelings, and understanding social cues.

When Xavier first started at Goodwill, he participated in a work evaluation program to demonstrate his current skills in a work setting. After a 10-day observation, he joined the Community Work Adjustment Training program and began working in the retail department at the Pleasant Hill Goodwill store. During this phase, he received more intensive on-the-job training to improve his vocational hard skills and soft skills. When Xavier wasn’t working, he attended job classes focusing on readiness, workplace conflict, and work/life balance. To prepare for his next job, he collaborated with Goodwill team members to develop a job search plan and learned how to complete online job applications accurately.

With the unwavering support of his parents and the Goodwill team, Xavier applied to four jobs before he received an offer. He was thrilled to secure a part-time position through Product Connections at Sam’s Warehouse as a Barista, starting at $13 an hour. Xavier attributes his success to his family and the Goodwill team, acknowledging their pivotal role in his journey. He is optimistic about his future career and is deeply appreciative of the consistent support he received from Goodwill.
